Why Doctors Choose Us for a Medical CV
As specialist medical CV writers, we have been helping doctors across Australia create competitive, professionally written applications since 2012. We work with junior doctors, registrars, GPs, MPs, RMOs, Registrars, BPT applicants and international doctors and medical graduates (IMGs) — and we understand the setting they’re navigating!
Medical recruitment in Australia is complex. Each state runs its own recruitment process with its own timelines, health service frameworks, and selection criteria. The documents that work for WA Health won’t automatically work for Queensland Health, NSW Health or SA Health. Applications need to be individually tailored, and that requires someone who understands not just professional writing, but the specific frameworks, college requirements, and terminology your selection panel expects to see.
We already speak the language of medicine. You won’t need to explain what an RCPA fellowship pathway looks like, what the difference is between a JMO campaign and a centralised registrar intake, or how to present AMC pathway progress for an overseas-trained doctor. We understand your world, and we know how to present it compellingly.
Who We Help
We write medical CVs and application documents for doctors at every stage of their Australian medical career, including (but not limited to)
- RMOs (Resident Medical Officers) — entering or progressing through postgraduate training across any state
- Registrars — applying for specialty training programs including surgical, physician, pathology, psychiatry, paediatrics, emergency medicine and more
- Anatomical Pathology Registrars — applying across the RCPA-accredited state-wide programs in NSW, QLD, WA, SA, VIC and the ACT
- GP Registrars — applying through RACGP and ACRRM training pathways
- International Medical Graduates (IMGs) — overseas-trained doctors navigating AHPRA registration and applying for their first Australian position
- Overseas-Trained Specialists — seeking specialist recognition, area-of-need positions, or short-term specialty training placements
- Senior Medical Officers and Consultants — applying for senior clinical, leadership, or academic roles
Understanding Medical Recruitment Across Australia
Western Australia
RMO positions in WA are advertised through MedCareersWA, with two annual intake campaigns — a mid-year campaign for January commencement and a January campaign for August commencement. A CV and cover letter formally addressing the selection criteria are standard required documents for all WA Health applications. For pathology registrar training, PathWest coordinates the state-wide program across five metropolitan laboratories and a number of private facilities.
New South Wales
RMO and registrar positions in NSW are recruited through the centralised NSW Health JMO campaign, typically opening July to August each year. There are separate streams for new and continuing trainees. Positions are networked state-wide with rotations across anchor hospitals and partner facilities. Each application requires documents tailored to the NSW Health values framework.
Queensland
Queensland manages recruitment through the QLD Health RMO Campaign portal, where applicants preference their specialty and health service. Shortlisting for registrar positions is based on your written application, selection criteria responses, and referee reports, with RCPA representatives involved directly in the selection panel for pathology specialties. Applications open and close on strict deadlines, and your written documents need to be strong before the campaign closes.
South Australia
RMO and PGY2+ positions in SA are managed through SA Health’s annual Expression of Interest process, administered by the South Australian Education and Training Unit (SA MET) on behalf of the South Australian Department for Health and Wellbeing and Local Health Networks. The process runs on a set annual calendar and requires documents aligned to SA Health’s own criteria framework.
ACT
Positions in the ACT are advertised directly through Canberra Health Services. Registrar-level roles are typically open from PGY3 onwards, and applicants are required to be enrolled in or intending to enrol in an accredited vocational training program with the relevant college.
Victoria
Victorian registrar positions are advertised through individual health services, with specialty-specific college bodies overseeing selection. As with other states, applications require tailored documents addressing each employer’s specific requirements.Because every state uses different frameworks and every role has its own criteria document, your CV, cover letter and selection criteria responses need to be specifically tailored for each application — not repurposed from a previous one!
International Medical Graduates — Applying for Australian Positions
If you have trained overseas and are applying to work in Australia as a doctor, your application documents carry additional complexity, and additional opportunity to stand out if they are done well.
Australian selection panels assess overseas-trained doctors on the same written criteria as locally trained doctors. However, your CV also needs to clearly present your registration pathway, AMC examination progress or Competent Authority / Specialist Pathway eligibility, your AHPRA registration status, and your international training history in a format that Australian panels are trained to read and assess and aligned with APHRA standard format for curriculum vitae
We help IMGs with:
- Presenting international qualifications, postgraduate training and procedural experience in Australian CV format
- Structuring AMC pathway progress, AHPRA registration category, and supervised practice arrangements clearly
- Demonstrating the equivalence of overseas experience against Australian training standards
- Addressing selection criteria that require evidence from an international clinical background
- Preparing applications for area-of-need positions, regional and rural roles, and specialist recognition pathways
We have worked with international medical graduates from the UK, Ireland, India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the Philippines, Egypt, the Middle East and many other countries, and understand how to present diverse clinical backgrounds in a way that resonates with Australian employers.
Medical CVs — What Makes a Strong Application
- Personal details, AHPRA registration number and registration category
- Medical qualifications and education — including undergraduate, postgraduate, and any college examinations or fellowship progress
- Clinical positions held — with clear description of scope, setting, rotation type and supervisors where relevant
- Procedural skills and competency logbook details (especially important for surgical and procedural specialties)
- Research, publications, presentations and conference activity
- Teaching and supervision responsibilities
- Quality improvement, audit and governance involvement
- Professional memberships, college affiliations and committee roles
- Referees at appropriate seniority level (typically consultant or above)
For overseas-trained doctors, the CV also needs to include AHPRA registration pathway details, overseas registration history, and AMC examination status. We structure every medical CV to meet the expectations of the state health service or college selection panel you are applying to, because what a WA Health selection committee expects to see is not identical to what an RCPA panel or a RACGP college body is assessing.
Selection Criteria for Medical Applications
- Clinical knowledge and competency within your specialty or training stage
- Communication and teamwork within multidisciplinary clinical environments
- Commitment to the training program and relevant college pathway
- Research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice
- Leadership, teaching and supervision experience
- Understanding of professional and ethical obligations in clinical practice
- Commitment to continuing professional development
We write every selection criteria response using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), drawing on specific, real examples from your clinical career. Instead of generic statements, your responses demonstrate exactly how you have applied your skills in clinical practice — with the level of specificity that selection panels are trained to look for.Because each state and each employer has its own criteria document, selection criteria services are quoted individually once we have the relevant documents. We provide an itemised quote before any work begins.

Applying Across Multiple States?
We strongly recommend applying to multiple states where you are eligible, competition for training positions is real, and every state represents a separate opportunity. We work with many doctors who are applying to three, four or five states simultaneously.
Our approach is to develop your core medical CV once, then tailor your selection criteria responses and cover letters for each individual state application, making the process as streamlined and cost-effective as possible, without compromising the quality or specificity of each document.

bsolutely. Many doctors, particularly those earlier in their career or coming from overseas, don't have a formal CV at all.
